Gutters for a barrier island that takes the weather first
Isle of Palms is a barrier island in Charleston County, with the Atlantic on one side and the Intracoastal Waterway and salt marsh on the other. Breach Inlet separates it from Sullivan’s Island, and the H.L. Hunley slipped out through that inlet in 1864. J.S. Lawrence bought the island in 1899 and gave it its name, and it became a town in 1938 and a city in 1957. Wild Dunes took shape at the northeast end starting in 1975, and the Isle of Palms Connector, finished in 1993, made it a straight drive from Mount Pleasant. Hurricane Hugo pushed storm surge across much of the island in September 1989. Today the city requires new and substantially improved homes in its flood zones to put the lowest floor at least a foot above base flood elevation, which is why so many houses here stand on pilings.
Gabe Gomez, a U.S. Marine Corps veteran, owns The Brothers That Just Do Gutters Charleston and runs it from Mount Pleasant, at the other end of the Connector. On the island we clean and flush gutters, swap out hangers and screws the salt has rusted, rehang runs the wind has pulled loose, replace soft fascia, form new seamless gutters on site and install BroGuard fine metal mesh. On tall raised homes with big roof planes, 6-inch gutters paired with larger downspouts carry a coastal downpour that a 5-inch run would spill. Estimates are free and written.
Charleston International Airport, the nearest long-record NOAA station, averages about 52.5 inches of rain a year, close to half of it June through September, which is also the heart of hurricane season. On Isle of Palms the weather comes straight off the ocean: salt spray coats every gutter, hanger and screw, sand blows into the trough and wind works on anything loose. A raised house also puts the gutter line two or three stories up, where small problems go unnoticed until water is pouring onto the parking pad below. Our maintenance program puts eyes on the gutters before the storm months and again after, which matters most when the house is a rental and nobody is home to notice.

Why the Brothers
Why Isle of Palms Homeowners Call the Brothers
We pick materials and fasteners that hold up near the ocean and replace rusted hardware before it lets go.
Loose runs turn into wind damage. We tighten, rehang and clean before the hurricane months, not after.
Tall houses on pilings collect a lot of roof. We size troughs and downspouts so a summer downpour lands where it should.

Salt spray. On a barrier island it lands on every gutter, hanger and screw, and any bare steel or scratched finish starts to rust. Hangers and fasteners usually give out before the gutter does, and then the run sags or pulls away in the next storm. Aluminum and copper gutters with corrosion-resistant hardware hold up best near the ocean, and a yearly check catches the rest early.
The same way we do any home, with taller ladders and more care. We form seamless runs on site to the exact length of each eave, then set downspouts to empty onto ground or drainage that carries water away, not onto the parking pad, the stairs or the storage area under the house. On big raised roofs we often recommend 6-inch gutters with 3×4 downspouts.
Yes. Atlantic hurricane season runs June 1 to November 30. In spring, have the troughs cleaned, the downspouts flushed, and loose hangers, split seams and bent runs fixed, because a loose gutter can tear off in high wind and take fascia with it. Do another check after any big storm. Our maintenance program can book both visits for you.
Put the house on our maintenance program. We schedule the cleanings and inspections at the right times, let you know what we found, and fix small problems before a guest notices water pouring off the roof. Gutter work is all outside, so you do not need to be on the island for it.
Yes. Our crews come over the Connector from Mount Pleasant and work the whole island, from the homes by Breach Inlet and along Palm Boulevard to Forest Trail, the Intracoastal side and Wild Dunes. The estimate is free and written, and one local team handles the job through the final downspout test.
