Gutters for West Ashley’s ranch streets and low, flat ground

West Ashley is the part of the City of Charleston across the Ashley River from the peninsula. Most of it sits inside city limits, with a few unincorporated pockets served by the St. Andrews Public Service District. Its first neighborhoods went up in the 1950s along Savannah Highway (US 17), and the biggest building wave came in the 1970s and 1980s, spreading along Sam Rittenberg Boulevard and Ashley River Road. An old rail line through the middle is now the West Ashley Greenway, 8.8 miles from Folly Road to Main Road. Farther west, the Church Creek basin drains more than 10,000 acres of very flat land that was once marsh and rice fields.

Gabe Gomez, a U.S. Marine Corps veteran, owns The Brothers That Just Do Gutters Charleston and runs it out of Mount Pleasant, and our crews cross the Ashley into West Ashley every week. We flush clogged downspouts, reseal leaking corners, rehang sagging runs, swap out soft fascia, form new seamless gutters from the truck and fit BroGuard fine metal mesh. On wide ranch roofs with long eaves, 6-inch gutters carry about 40 percent more water than standard 5 inch runs. The estimate is always free and in writing.

In a normal year Charleston International Airport records about 52.5 inches of rain, and close to half of it arrives June through September, often as a hard afternoon storm. West Ashley is flat, and in the Church Creek basin the city has spent more than $4 million on drainage because water is slow to leave. When a gutter spills over or a downspout empties at the slab, that water sits right where you least want it. Our maintenance program keeps troughs and downspouts open before summer storms, so late spring is the time to get on the schedule.

West Ashley Gutter Questions, Answered

Can gutters help with standing water in the Church Creek basin?

They help with the water that comes off your roof. In the Church Creek basin the ground is flat and slow to drain, so a downspout that empties at the foundation leaves water sitting there. We clear and size the gutters to keep up, then add downspout extensions or underground drainage to carry roof water farther out. Gutters will not stop street or creek flooding, but they keep your roof from adding to it at the slab.

Can an older West Ashley brick ranch take seamless gutters?

Yes, and ranches are some of the easiest homes to fit. Their long, straight eaves suit one-piece runs. The catch is usually the wood behind the old gutter, after decades of paint and patches. We probe the fascia, swap any rotten boards and form each run from coil at the house, so a long front eave has no joint dripping over the front steps.

What size gutters does a West Ashley home need?

Many single-story ranches do fine with 5 inch gutters and 2×3 downspouts, as long as no run longer than about 40 feet relies on one downspout. Bigger roofs and two-story homes usually do better with 6 inch gutters, which carry about 40 percent more water, paired with larger downspouts. We measure the roof and the runs on the walkthrough and tell you which one your house needs.

Do gutter guards work under West Ashley live oaks?

Yes, when they are the right kind. Live oaks drop small leaves and stringy catkins in spring, and pines add needles and a heavy coat of pollen, which pack into open gutters and slip through coarse screens. BroGuard is a fine metal mesh that keeps that debris on the surface while rain passes through, and it carries a limited lifetime warranty.

Do you serve all of West Ashley, from Avondale to Bees Ferry Road?

Yes. We work the older streets near Savannah Highway, including Avondale, Byrnes Downs and Windermere, the neighborhoods along Sam Rittenberg Boulevard and Ashley River Road, and the Church Creek basin out to Shadowmoss, Hickory Farms and Bees Ferry Road. Every West Ashley estimate is free and in writing, and one local team handles the job start to finish.
