Quick answer
Gutter Repair in Charleston, SC: The Brothers That Just Do Gutters Charleston fixes gutters that drip at the joints, sag or separate, hang from loose hardware, or have bent and disconnected downspouts, plus the fascia they are fastened to, for homes across Charleston, Berkeley and Dorchester counties. When a repair will not hold, we say so and quote a replacement section instead. Most repairs are done in one visit. Call (843) 867-2267 or book online.
Gutters have one job: carry roof water off the house and away from it. When they leak, sag or overflow, that water lands on the fascia, the walls and the foundation instead. In the Lowcountry a weak joint does not stay hidden for long: close to half of Charleston’s 52 and a half inches of rain a year lands June through September, often in afternoon thunderstorms that find every bad seam at once.
Many historic Charleston homes still carry gutters that went up long ago. Sometimes a cleaning or a few new hangers is all it takes. Sometimes the honest answer is new seamless gutters, and we will tell you which.

The quiet signs of a failing gutter, and what each repair involves
Most gutter damage here builds up between storms and shows itself in the first summer downpour. These are the clues you can spot today, and what we do about each one.
In the Lowcountry, every summer tests a gutter hard, but the afternoon storms blow through fast and most people are indoors when they hit. So the evidence you can find is whatever the last storm left behind: on the ground, on the walls and on the wood below the roofline.
Walk the house on a dry day and look down before you look up. A straight line worn into the pine straw under the eave, paint peeling near the base of a wall, or a garage door with a swollen bottom edge each marks a spot where water left the gutter early. On older homes in West Ashley, North Charleston and Summerville, those marks often line up with a joint, a corner or a run that has dropped out of pitch.
Subtle signs worth a closer look
- A line or shallow trench worn into the soil, mulch or pine straw right under the eave.
- Paint flaking or peeling early near the bottom of the walls.
- Mildew or dark staining on siding, stucco or brick below a gutter.
- Swollen or rotting garage doors, door frames, windowsills, porch boards or deck boards under the roofline.
- Cracked or lifted walkways, patio slabs, driveways or steps near a downspout.
- Nail heads backing out of the face of the gutter.
- A dip or a backward slope you can see when you sight down the run.
Common repairs and what they involve
| Problem | What we do | When repair stops making sense |
|---|---|---|
| A seam, corner or end cap that drips | Clean the joint and reseal it, or replace the end cap or corner piece | When a sectional gutter leaks at joint after joint |
| A run that sags or pulls off the house | Re-pitch it and rehang it on new hidden hangers into solid wood | When the trough itself is bent or kinked along its length |
| Spikes working loose | Swap the spikes for screwed-in hidden hangers | When the system is near the end of its life and leaking elsewhere too |
| A downspout knocked loose or crushed | Reattach it and replace the damaged section and elbows | Rarely, this is almost always a repair |
| Hangers that will not hold | Check the board, then replace or wrap it through our fascia board service before rehanging | When the fascia is rotted along most of the run, board and gutter often come down together |
| Water pooling at the foundation | Check the outlets, then extend the downspouts or take them underground | Not a replacement issue, unless the gutter above is overflowing |
Repair or replace: how to tell
- Count the failures. One bad corner is a repair. Leaks at several joints on a sectional system usually mean a seamless gutter is the cheaper long-term answer.
- Check the age signs.Spike and ferrule fastening, heavy color fade on the outside of the gutter and seams along the length of each run all point to an older system.
- Look at the wood.If the fascia is sound, a run can be rehung and keep working. If it is not, the gutter is coming down anyway, and that is usually the moment for a new gutter installation.
On the islands, from Folly Beach to Isle of Palms and Sullivan’s Island, salt air adds one more question: whether the hardware along the rest of the run is close to failing too. We check the whole run, not just the spot that let go.

Overflow away from the downspout usually means a repair issue rather than a clog. The run may be pitched the wrong way, too small for the roof above it, short a downspout, or sagging off the fascia. When water spills right beside the downspout, a blockage is the more likely cause, and a cleaning usually fixes it.
Yes. We reseal leaking joints, corners and end caps. If a sectional gutter leaks at joint after joint, patching turns into a yearly chore, and switching to seamless runs formed on site ends it, because no joints are left in the middle of the run to fail.
That is spike and ferrule: a long spike driven through the face of the gutter, through a sleeve, and into the board behind it. It usually means the system is around 20 years old, and on older homes around West Ashley, North Charleston and Summerville it is one of the first things a Solutionist checks. Nail heads backing out are a sign the gutter is pulling loose and the wood behind it may be rotting.
It can. On Folly Beach, Isle of Palms, Sullivan’s Island and other homes near the water, salt air works on fasteners, hangers and other hardware, so a loose run there may need new hardware rather than a tightened screw. We look at the hardware along the whole run, not just the spot that failed.
A well-installed system that is cleaned regularly or protected by guards should last up to 30 years. Gutters left on their own usually fail somewhere between 10 and 15 years. The Lowcountry mix of heavy summer downpours, pine straw that mats flat in the trough and spring pollen that seals the outlets is hard on a neglected system.
Yes. Through storm season, roughly June through September, overflow calls and runs pulling off the house move to the front of the line. The smarter play is fixing loose hangers and leaky joints in late spring, before the summer storms start. If water is already going somewhere it should not, call (843) 867-2267.
