Johns Island Gutter Solutionists
Gutters for the state’s biggest island, farm roads to new streets
Johns Island covers about 84 square miles, the largest island in South Carolina. The tidal Stono River, part of the Intracoastal Waterway, separates it from the mainland, and the Stono and Kiawah rivers divide it from neighbors like Kiawah and Seabrook. Settlers from Barbados named it for a parish back home, and it stayed farm country for centuries; working farms still line River Road. About a third of the island is now inside the City of Charleston and the rest is county land, with an urban growth boundary in place since 1999 as subdivisions fill in along Maybank Highway and Main Road.
Gabe Gomez, a U.S. Marine Corps veteran, owns The Brothers That Just Do Gutters Charleston and runs it from Mount Pleasant, and our trucks make the drive out Maybank Highway to Johns Island every week. We clean out and flush gutters, fix leaking joints and pulled hangers, roll new seamless runs off the truck, replace rotted fascia and fit BroGuard fine metal mesh. For tall raised homes and big roofs on open lots, 6-inch gutters give a summer cloudburst somewhere to go besides over the front edge. Every estimate is free and written down.
Charleston International Airport logs about 52.5 inches of rain in a normal year, and close to half of it comes June through September, mostly in afternoon thunderstorms. Out on Johns Island much of that rain falls through live oaks hung with Spanish moss and through tall pines, so leaves, catkins, moss and needles ride the water straight into the gutter. On big rural lots with low spots, a backed-up downspout turns into standing water fast. Our maintenance program puts your house on a set schedule, so the trough is open before the summer storms instead of after the first overflow.

It adds to the problem. Spanish moss hangs from live oaks all over Johns Island, and wind and storms knock clumps loose along with oak leaves and catkins. In a gutter, moss holds water and binds the smaller debris into a mat that blocks the downspout outlet. BroGuard fine metal mesh keeps moss and leaves on top of the gutter, and a spring cleaning handles whatever the guard does not.
Not always, but check three things after a hard storm. If water spills over the front edge, if a run longer than about 40 feet has only one downspout, or if downspouts empty right beside the slab, an upgrade is worth a look. We can add or move downspouts, or replace undersized runs with 6 inch gutters, which carry about 40 percent more water than 5 inch.
Plan on at least two cleanings a year: one in late spring after the live oaks shed and the pine pollen settles, and one in fall after the pine straw drops. Homes on wooded lots with live oaks hanging over the roof can need a third. Our maintenance program books those visits for you, and BroGuard can cut down on hand cleaning for homes under heavy canopy.
Away from the house and toward ground that can take it. Many Johns Island lots are big, flat and low in spots, so roof water that dumps at the foundation tends to sit there after a storm. We set downspouts where the yard falls away, add extensions where needed, and on wetter lots run underground drainage to carry the water farther out, so it stops collecting against the house.
Yes. Our crews cover Johns Island from the Stono River out Maybank Highway, Main Road, River Road and Bohicket Road, including neighborhoods like Stonoview and Kiawah River, and we continue on to homes on Kiawah and Seabrook islands. If your community has a gate, let us know when you book. Every estimate is free and in writing, and one local team does the work start to finish.
