Why gutter guards matter in the Lowcountry
What an open gutter costs a Lowcountry home
Before the BroGuard details, here is why covering your gutters pays off at all, based on what our crew pulls out of troughs from Summerville to Sullivan’s Island.
Water over the front edge
When the trough is packed, an afternoon thunderstorm sends water over the lip instead of down the downspout. It runs down the fascia board every time it rains, and that is how the wood behind your gutter softens and the hangers let go.
Water around the foundation
Lowcountry lots tend to be flat. Overflow drops in a line right against the house, puddles around the piers of raised homes and along foundations, and washes out planting beds, because there is no slope to carry it away.
Pine straw, live oaks, pollen
Pines drop straw in the fall, live oaks shed leaves and catkins in spring, sweetgums add spiky balls, and a coat of yellow pine pollen settles over everything. Then an afternoon thunderstorm washes it all into the trough as sludge.
Cleanings on repeat
Under that mix, an open gutter needs a clean-out after the fall pine drop and again after the spring oak and pollen season, more under a big live oak. Miss the spring one and the first summer storm finds the clog before you do.
Fewer trips up the ladder
Every open gutter means somebody on a ladder, often at the second story. The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission estimates about 273,000 injuries involving ladders and stools were treated in U.S. emergency departments in 2024. A guard turns most of those climbs into a quick check after the fall pine drop.

Standing water and pests
Wet, packed debris gives mosquitoes and spiders a place to settle, and an open trough gives squirrels and birds a sheltered spot to nest right along your roofline.
Gutter guard types, compared honestly
Every type of guard keeps something out. The difference is what it lets through, and what you are still cleaning afterward. Quality varies inside every category, too: a mesh guard is only as good as the weave, the frame under it and how it is fastened to the gutter.
| Guard type | What it stops | What gets through | Upkeep |
|---|---|---|---|
| Coarse screens | Big leaves and loose clumps of pine straw | Pine needles, oak catkins and spring pollen slip through the openings and settle in the trough | Debris lodges in and under the screen, so it still has to come off for a real cleaning |
| Foam inserts | Leaves that land on top, at first | Grit and seed work into the foam, water can sit in it, and seedlings can sprout in it | Pulled out and cleaned or replaced once it packs up |
| Brush inserts | Some larger leaves and twigs | Needles and small leaves tangle in the bristles, and fine debris drops to the bottom of the gutter | Brushes come out and get shaken clean, more often under heavy tree cover |
| Reverse curve or surface tension covers | Leaves that slide off the rounded nose | Fine debris follows the water into the slot, and in a hard downpour some water can shoot past the edge | The slot and the trough under it can still clog, and the cover has to come off to clean them |
| Micro-mesh | Pine straw, live oak leaves, catkins, sweetgum balls and most grit | Water. Spring pine pollen can sit on the surface until rain or a brush clears it | An occasional look at the surface and the downspouts; most interior cleanings stop |
Why our Charleston crew installs BroGuard
We install one guard: BroGuard. It is stainless steel micro-mesh that lets the rain straight through and keeps pine straw, live oak leaves, sweetgum balls and spring pollen on top. It is fastened along the gutter, so it stays put through a summer thunderstorm, and the low profile means you barely see it from the street. Keep scrolling to watch it work, or read our gutter guard guide if you are still weighing whether guards fit your house.

Frequently Asked Questions
BroGuard is the stainless micro-mesh gutter guard installed by The Brothers That Just Do Gutters Charleston. The mesh keeps pine straw, live oak leaves, sweetgum balls and pollen on top while rain runs through into the gutter, so the trough stays open between cleanings. It carries a limited lifetime warranty.
Yes. Pine needles slip through coarse screens and mat flat in an open trough, and spring pine pollen turns to sludge at the outlets. The fine mesh holds needles and leaves on the surface, where wind and rain clear most of it, and pollen washes off instead of collecting in the gutter.
It stays put and keeps working. The panels are fastened along the gutter, and the mesh lets the downpour through while the leaves and needles the storm knocks loose stay on top, where the next rain or wind mostly clears them.
Any time of year works, but the best window is before the spring pollen and the June to September storms. We clear out the fall pine drop first, then install the guard so the gutters go into the wettest months clear.
Usually, if the gutters are in good shape. A Solutionist checks the slope, seams and hangers first. On historic Charleston homes with sectional gutters that leak at every joint, we will tell you honestly whether a new seamless run makes more sense before a guard goes on.
Far less. The mesh eliminates most interior cleanings, but no guard is completely maintenance-free. A quick check after the fall pine drop and the spring pollen makes sure the surface is clear and the downspouts are flowing.
