Quick answer

Gutter Sizes in Charleston, SC: The Brothers That Just Do Gutters Charleston forms 6 and 7 inch seamless gutters on site. 6 inch is our standard for Lowcountry homes and carries roughly 40 percent more water than the 5 inch gutters many builders put up, and 7 inch is for commercial buildings and very large roof areas. Call (843) 867-2267 or book online.

Gutter size is a capacity question. A trough that handles a light shower in Summerville can spill along its whole length when a July thunderstorm parks over West Ashley for an hour. Properly sized seamless gutters are built for the peak, not the average, and send it to downspouts that can keep up.

Lowcountry rooflines cover a wide range: historic homes on the peninsula, raised island homes on Isle of Palms and Folly Beach, metal roofs, pool houses and two-story homes in Summerville and Goose Creek. Each one gets measured before we name a size.

Gutter sizing for Lowcountry homes

Which gutter size fits your house? Start with the roofline you live under

The Lowcountry has a handful of common home types, and each one points toward a size. Here is the short version, with a page for each size when you want the detail.

A roof is a collector. It gathers rain across every square foot and delivers it to one edge, and that edge hands it to a few downspouts. Gutter size follows how much water a given run receives: how much roof drains toward it, how steep that roof is, and whether a valley or an upper roof dumps extra water onto it. Two runs on the same house can see very different loads.

Size also sets the downspout. A 6 inch gutter pairs with a 3×4 inch downspout and a 7 inch with oversized downspouts. A wide trough feeding a small outlet still backs up, so we choose the two together and write both into your estimate.

Size by home type in the Lowcountry

These are starting points, not verdicts. Your Solutionist still measures every run, but this is where most Lowcountry homes land.

Home typeWhere you see itUsual starting point
Single-story ranch with a shingle roofNorth Charleston, Hanahan, Ladson6 inch gutters with 3×4 inch downspouts
Two-story home with an upper roof draining onto a lower oneSummerville, Goose Creek6 inch gutters, with an added downspout on the lower runs
Raised island home with big roof planes and long runsIsle of Palms, Folly Beach6 inch, or 7 inch where the water gathers, with downspouts carried past the edge of the house
Historic Charleston homeCharleston peninsula6 inch, often in a half-round profile from our gutter styles
Condo or HOA building with a long low-slope or metal roofJames Island, Daniel Island, West Ashley6 inch or 7 inch gutters with oversized downspouts

Rule these out before you pay for a bigger gutter

  • Overflow at one spot only. That usually points to debris at an outlet, and a proper gutter cleaning may be the whole fix.
  • A run over 40 feet with a single downspout. It needs a second outlet before it needs a wider trough.
  • Downspouts that are too small. Going from 2×3 to 3×4 inch adds capacity at the outlet, and it is part of every 6 inch run we hang.
  • A run that has lost its pitch. A sag holds water in the middle and spills there, which a rehang corrects.
  • An upper downspout emptying onto a lower roof. That lower run is carrying two roofs, the classic spot for 6 inch and an added downspout.
  • Water shooting past the front edge below a valley. That corner may need a wider gutter even if the rest of the house does not.

How mixed sizes lay out on one house

  1. Simple eaves stay 6 inch.Front and side runs that only catch their own roof plane rarely need more, so you do not pay for 7 inch capacity you will never use.
  2. Collector runs move to 6 inch. The lower gutter under an upper roof, the corner below an inside valley and any run over 60 feet get the wider trough.
  3. Downspouts follow the gutter.3×4 inch outlets on the 6 inch runs, oversized outlets on the 7 inch runs, placed where the water actually lands and marked section by section on your written estimate.

More Ways We Help Charleston Homeowners

Go deeper on each size, or on what happens after the water leaves the gutter.

How it works

Sizing Your Gutters, Step by Step

  1. 1Tell us the trouble spots

Point out where water spills, splashes or pools, and we start there.

  2. 2Measure the roof

The Solutionist checks roof area, pitch, valleys and any upper roofs draining to lower ones.

  3. 3Match gutter to downspout

Gutter size and outlet count are chosen together, then written into your estimate.

  4. 4Form, hang and flush

Runs are formed on the truck, hung and tested with water before we call it done.

Why the Brothers

Why Charleston Homeowners Call the Brothers

01Sized, not guessed

We measure the roof and recommend from the numbers. If 6 inch is enough, we say so, and we only go to 7 inch where the roof calls for it.

02Both sizes, formed on site

We form 6 and 7 inch at the house, so mixing sizes on one home is routine rather than a special order.

03Owned here

Gabe Gomez, a U.S. Marine Corps veteran, owns the Charleston territory and runs it from Mount Pleasant, with an 843 number that reaches the team doing the work.

04No upselling capacity

Bigger is not always better. We will not sell you a wider gutter your roof does not need.

Gutter Size Questions, Answered

Is 6 inch or 7 inch right for my Charleston house?

For most homes in North Charleston, Hanahan and Ladson, 6 inch does the job, and it is the size we install on the two-story homes in Summerville, Goose Creek and Mount Pleasant too, with added downspouts where an upper roof empties onto a lower one. Very large, steep or metal roof planes can call for 7 inch. A Solutionist measures before recommending either.

How can I tell if my gutters are undersized?

Watch them in a hard rain. A clog overflows at one spot, right where the debris sits. An undersized gutter spills evenly along the run even when it is clean, or water shoots past the front edge. Lower gutters catching an upper roof are the usual suspects.

What decides the right gutter size?

Roof area, pitch, the shape of the roofline and the local rain pattern. A large, steep roof sends more water, faster, than a small, shallow one. Mixing sizes on one house is often the most cost-effective answer when only part of the roof needs extra capacity.

How many downspouts does a gutter need?

A run under 40 feet can usually work with one downspout; over 40 feet, plan on two. If a long run cannot take a second downspout, that is a reason to step up to 6 inch. Adding downspouts in the right spots often fixes overflow without changing the gutter at all.

Why does gutter size matter so much in Charleston?

Charleston gets about 52.5 inches of rain a year, and close to half of it falls June through September, much of it in short afternoon thunderstorms. Gutters have to be sized for those downpours, not the average day. Pine straw and oak debris in the trough cut capacity further, so size and cleaning go together.

Do flat or low-slope roofs need different gutters?

Low-slope roofs on ranch homes and apartment buildings shed water more slowly, but often from a large area to a single edge. That concentration is what we size for. Some need 6 inch, and big apartment or commercial roofs may call for 7 inch with oversized downspouts.
